The implementation of an onsite pilot project CRISS as part of EU Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020 started in September 2018 with the aim of developing and implementing digital platforms for acquiring, assessment and certification of digital competences of students.
Within the project a platform for personilzed learning and teaching digital competence was developed in order to provide open and scalable possibilities of teaching in the cloud.
20 schools from Croatia participate in this project, of which 7 primary and 13 secondary schools. Currently 1082 students and 80 teachers are involved in the project and in the course of the school year 2018/2019 they will test the platform performances and implement and assess digital competence of their students. In their teaching teachers will have access to teaching scenarios that will help them in the overall process of the assessment of digital competence.
This online platform enables teachers to enrich their teaching materials with digital content such as video, pictures, flexible multimedia presentations and such. Secondly, it offers them a simpler and faster assessment because they can track their student’s progress in real time.The CRISS platform supports communication which allows teachers to communicate with students at any given moment via messages and comments thus giving them feedback about the completion of tasks. On the other hand, students can use the platform as means of perfecting and acquiring digital competence through all school subjects in the education system. It offers them various digital tools and multimedia content which they can use to create creative and innovative content.
The frontrunner in working with the CRISS platform is the secondary School of Administration from Zagreb and the informatics teacher Jasmina Kljunić who included her second grade students in the project. From a rich repository she chose one of the ten scenarios offered-„My Internet“. The aim of this scenario was to raise awareness of the safe usage of digital tools and technologies and the students were asked to work in groups to create their own Inernet with the slogan “Create, respect and connect: the better Internet starts with you”
CARNET’s team of associates on the CRISS project participated in the class and had the opportunity to witness first hand the application of tools in teaching. Students showed a high level of motivation in working on the platform and its tools and they showed an interest in topics they learned about in the Informatics class. The offered scenarios were related to the curriculum and they will serve the teacher to additionally motivate and engage her students. Teaching took place in a friendly and positive atmosphere and the students made an effort to actively participate in all the activities. During reflexion the teacher emphasised the positive reactions of students to introdoucing new digital tools in teaching and she felt it was a fresh approach to teaching. Althouugh Ms Kljunić teaches Informatics she stated that the platform was intuitive and simple to use and thought that the interdisciplinary approach recommended by the scenarios implied it could be used in other subjects.
All interested school are still welcome to apply in the online pilot project and use the platforms in their schools thus allowing their students to certify digital competence.
